Dudes, you’re FREAKIN’ ME OUT
Can I hear a collective “EWWWWWW!!!!”
Twice today–TWICE–I got an unexpected and unappreciated neighbor when visiting the men’s room. TWICE. Nobody else in the room, stalls aplenty open and available for use…but no, NOT TODAY, these guys have to sit right next to me when they do their business.
Programmers, help me out here: Is this a software developer thing (my floor is dominated by developers)? Something about maintaining stacks, or linear thinking, or serialization? I can’t think of a single logical reason for a guy to choose stall #2 when stall #1 is occupied and stalls #3 and #4 are available.
Actually I can think of a reason, but I’d like to think positively about my co-workers.
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

The only guess I can even come up with is perhaps there’s an instinct to sit as far away from the front as possible - where their shoes would not be easily seen or identified by people coming in the door/washing hands/or whatever…?
I have to say, that’s still not a valid excuse for sitting right next to you, though.
I guess I’m lucky inasmuch as 1) My office has a relatively small employee count; 2) the Others seem to have this unwritten rule: Thou Restroom Shalt Not Be Occupied By More Than One Person At A Time, even though there are two stalls in the first floor women’s room, even if they are just doing a quick No. 1. (They might be old, but they’ve got appreciable bathroom etiquette.)
My suggestion? Find a “Wet Floor” sign, or other “Out of Order”-type sign, and put it on/in the stall next to you while doing your business.

The “Wet Floor”/”Out of Order” sign idea is a good one. I may have to consider that.
Another idea is to cork all neighboring toilets with paper towels before doing my business. If there’s one thing guys hate, it’s touching a plunger. It may be extreme, but I bet it would work. Or I could smear food on the toilet seats in neighboring stalls. That would keep a few of them out.
Argh!
